Is democracy always appropriate?

I know I’ve said it might take a while but I’ve realised that if study a bit more I’ll go crazy and forget everything.

Yes, democracy is to some extent, a ‘good thing’ which all societies should aspire. But there are some situations in which democrat is not appropriate.

In Europe and USA the fact that we should all be free and there should be freedom of thought, expression and so on is true. However, what if other countries don’t believe in this?

There are many places which I ruled by religious codes and the people there don’t know much about democracy. They’ve been ruled that way since ever and they expect their leaders to govern them according to the teachings of their Holy Book (I’m being diplomatic and not naming any religion because I don’t wanna infuriate people). People in those countries don’t really care about democratic principles. Do they? Well, there may be some. But not everyone. They’re probably a minority if they do aspire to democracy.

There may be economic reasons for which a country decides to put economy on the first place, before democratic principles. Many African states this.
However, real democrats such as Nelson Mandela insists that ‘people would prefer to be free than to be well fed.’

I have to disagree with this. I’m totally against it. How can anyone say this? I understand that him and black people have been attacked many times because of their colour but you can’t say this. Why would you be free if you’ll die in a couple if days anyway because you have nothing with what to feed yourself and your family. Let’s be logical. There’s no point. If you, the one who reads this thinks the opposite, please do let me know and I’ll happily read what you wrote and also reply.

And going back to the point, moreover, even established democracies such as the UK and America put aside some aspects of their democracy when faced with a war.

I believe this is the right thing to do. Let’s all live in democracies. But let’s not exaggerate. Law and order or/and national security is more important than some democratic aspects. Especially because those will be reimplemented once the country is out of that critical situation

As I said before. I’ll happily read your comments. Any opinion is welcome!

Democracy

What is democracy?

Who could be the best person to tell us what is democracy? Who other than Abraham Lincoln?

Government of the people.
Government by the people.
Government for the people.

.. a political system where government should serve the interests of people.

Can this fully happen nowadays? No. Because some people simply don’t deserve the rights they’re entitled to. It is not only about rights. You have responsibilities as well. You don’t just expect things to be done. You need to influence that thing yourself.

After studying for a year about the government and the politics of the UK, I could say that I do know some stuff and I must say that I also know more things than some British citizens. Is it right? Nope. There’s an decreasing amount of people voting, taking part in politics and so on. Yes, I understand that many feel unrepresented, but still.. you have some duties to your country which should never be suspended. And this goes to everyone, whether they’re in the UK, America, any European country (this kind of problems are also in Romania unfortunately) or anywhere around the world.

People are sometimes asking and to not seem hypocritical, I’ve asked this question myself.. ‘Why vote?’ Why not? Your vote may surely not change anything, but if everyone votes, then you will see a change even if at the beginning it’s a small one.

Democracy establishes and protects freedoms./strong>
Not so sure about that. Isn’t America democratic? Then what’s up with all those Illuminati crappy people? Isn’t the UK democratic? Then why all the undemocratic institutions within the system of government? Romania calls herself a democratic country. Then why is everything so negative. Why are they all adopting the ACTA thing?

For those who don’t know what that is, ACTA stands for Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.

Democracy protects minorities.
Nope. A referendum is the rule of the majority. Who’s the majority wins and who’s the minority get nothing and their opinions are not taken into account.

Democracy controls government power.
Nope.
‘With great power comes great insanity.’

Democracy encourages popular participation.
To some extent and this is a long topic which I’d rather not get involved in because I’m able to write about it forever. Maybe that if our leaders would know how to do so, it would be successful.

Democracy disperses power more widely.
Nope. Or at least 90% wrong. Are politicians fair? No. Do they achieve all the things they tell us during their campaigns? No. Maybe local mayors yes, but when it comes to a regional and most of all, a national level they’re just some lying people.. wanted to offend them, but why lower myself.

I want to study politics (and I will) and the fact that I’m writing all this, is because I’m interested in it. I know they all say what I’m saying now, but no matter where I will go, I won’t change myself and I will never become one of them.

Is democracy always appropriate?
This is the next thing I will write about later on today, if I don’t pass out before.

Why do we want to be something we’re not?

I want to be tanned. I want to have either curly hair or straight hair. I want to be taller. To some extent I want to be a bit thinner. I want to be like this. I want to be like that. I want to do this. I want to do that.

I want all to be how I’m not. I want all the things I don’t have.

Why?

For example, okay, I have rather light skin. Not too light, I do have some colour, but I’m not dark either. I personally do everything (not counting the extremes of course) to be dark(er). I tan. I use different things. Oh God. Only I know what I go through. I mean, that’s what everyone back home (Romania) likes to do and I bet most people in Europe or America does too. But guess what? When I came to Kuwait I had one of the biggest shocks ever. All the shops were full of… WHITENING creams. Yes, you read well. How we have tanning lotions, oils or creams, they have the same things, but for becoming whiter.

I mean, why can’t you take my colour and I have yours? I’d be so happy!

Another example may be the fact that my hair is weird, somewhere in between straight and curly, but it’s not wavy. Can’t explain it. I have many friends with curly hair. They want straight hair, while I would do anything to have amazing, natural curls. Heaven on Earth.

It happens all the time. I know this. It’s a fact. But I just can’t stop wondering why. Why are we so complicated, yet so simple. Or so simple, yet so complicated. Why can’t be thankful with what we have?

Don’t get me wrong. I am thankful, but there’s always that something and since the weather got well, I keep tanning. I could literally lay down under the sun the whole day. And if I had a good book, or good music and a cold drink (whether is beer, my favourite or just water or Cola) it would be even better.

Why do we want the opposite of what we have? Is it normal?
